Christians, what is the purpose of a punishment ?

Hell is not forever as it will also wind up in the Lake of Fire. Hell gave up it's dead and they stood in the judgement. What will happen at that time, I've questioned this myself. The Lake of Fire is a place for sorcerers, whoremongers, those who love and make a lie, etc. It is a place of eternal separation from God. i understand this punishment to be a choice. U choose to go there. And isn't Satan a sadist? Didn't he choose a route that he knew would separate him from God. If one chooses to make a joke out of him in life, why would they want to be in his presence for eternity?
