Why would G0d send anyone to hell?

I am a christian and fully understand your question. Most fundamentalists believe every word in the bible. I can not believe that a merciful God sends people to hell. I read a book called Conversations With God ( that most christians think is the work of the devil), but "GOD" explains that hell is not a real physical place, it is merely a state of mind By separating ourselves from the thoughts of God. We bring ourself in and out of it. This makes a lot more sense.
